For me it needs to be long enough to engage in a new project and get my mind off the thing so that I can come at it fresh... but I would say that it's rare for me to need much more than a few months. <br /><br />As for the review process, I think that 2-3 months is somewhat reasonable. Sometimes I feel like I do really need a month or six weeks to chew over a paper (especially if I had other stuff to do in the mean time) - and then there's getting the reviewers and writing a decision letter.
